The first picture is from Opening Day, August 28th....In this picture, Sterling (Crappieman) is letting the dogs get up close and personal with the first Squirrel of the 2010 season. The white dog is Sterling's little Sam dog (Cody bred). The little brown & white dog is my Pretty Boy Smarty. Even though Smarty had already gotten snake bit when this picture was made, he had gotten back up and was hunting again.

Southern Squirrel dog
This picture is from today, August 29th...This is Buckley's Ol #7 (Joe Black & Buckley's Princess), with his first squirrel of the 2010 season. I was proud of Seven this morning, he treed 4 times, good strong mouth on him, stayed put at all four trees until I could get to him, I saw three of them, shot at two of them, killed one of them.......it looks like my shooting ability is picking up right where it left off last season :-) The squirrel that got away cost me 2.00 or 3.00 dollars worth of fresh powder & shot :-) I'd had a better tailgate picture this morning if Crappieman (Ol Dead Eye) had been with me but he had a fishing tournment scheduled.
If the first morning with Seven is any indication, that "Long Legged Pricked Eared Rascal" is going to make me lose a few pounds this fall :-) Hope you enjoy the picture.

Took my 12 month old young dog Muggsy " LT X Pumpgun" out this morning. She found her one to chase up a big red oak. Never saw it so she never got no fur.

Fish and game club youth squirrel hunt
A few weeks ago I was called by Joe Bolton one of the officials of the Dewey Lake Fish and Game club and asked if I could bring a squirrel dog over to their annual squirrel hunt for the youth. I gave them a little talk about caring for and raising the pup and then training him to be a squirrel dog.
Joe said the club was going to trap a wild squirrel and turn it loose so the kids could see a squirrel dog tree a squirrel. I told him I would be glad to show the kids one of my dogs.
They wanted to take the squirrel out in a grassy field and cut it loose and watch Taz tree it. Well that was almost a mistake for the fox squirrel because when he got to the trees I cut Taz loose. The squirrel decided not to go up the 1st trees and Taz had him in his mouth but loosed him and he climbed a big beech tree and Taz treed him.
This was a great event the club had for the kids. The club cooked dinner Friday night, breakfast Saturday morning and another big dinner Saturday afternoon for well over 300 people. After dinner Saturday They had a raffle and gave away 14 shotguns, bunches of rods and reels, knives and bunches of other fishing and hunting gear. Every kid got a ticket and every kid won something.. Not sure how many kids were there this year but last year there were 160 kids showed up for the event.
Saturday morning there was 43 kids participated in the squirrel hunt " still hunting" and they brought in 43 squirrels.

Michigan squirrel dogs
Bill McConnell and his wife Linda drove down from Laingsburg, Michigan yesterday afternoon and spent the night at Hazard, KY. and drove on over this morning and picked up their two Prick Eared female Michigan Mountain Feist pups. Linda is holding a pup out of Boots X Bigun . Bill is holding a pup out of Conleys Cassie a Buckley bred dog & Bigun. Good luck with the pups Bill and please keep us updated on their progress.

Took Boots out in the woods for the 1st time since she weaned her pups. She treed two times and I saw one of them. I also actually saw about 5 hickory cut on a little. Not 5 trees but 5 nuts.

Hey Jack, how are things getting along down in your area? Probably just as dry as it is up here. At least the grass has slowed down growing! LOL!!!!! I've been off work for almost 1 1/2 months, and have been busy with the boy, pup, and other things and haven't had a chance to get on SDC or your web page or blog much.

You know our old hunt'n buddy Sterling is an accomplished Crappie Fisherman, Squirrel Hunter, Turkey Hunter, Deer Hunter etc.....now we can add Watermellon Grower to that list. The first pictures were taken a couple weeks ago and show some nice Charleston Grays he had growing in his garden. I've had my eye on those two in the picture while they were on the vine, but was waiting for a good clear night to go shopping for them :-)
Well he picked them today and called me to come over after work and pick one up, but as usual I was late and got there after the help had helped themselves, but there was still some nice ones left.
Sterling raised a couple nice garden this summer and is already planning next year's crops.

Wv Squirrel dog
Jennifer and Shawn Waeneer of Elikview, WV just dropped in on their way back from their vacation in the Great Smokey Mountains and picked up their second natural bob tail white Wv mountain Feist female pup out of Bunny & Bigun Jennifer is holding. The other pup Maggie Mae Shawn is holding. They came down two weeks ago and picked her up. She is out of Zoey X Joe Black. It sure was great seeing Maggie Mae again. She is a life wire and slick as a new penny.

As a Mountain Feist breeder I'm truly blessed by having my puppy handler EM on my Team. She is the greatest with the pups. She starts handling them at a week old. Then when they get 3 weeks old she gets them out of the box and starts playing with them. If one has noticed the other pics of her and the pups I post you will notice the pups are all over her . The pups are crazy over Em and this is one of the best things I have going for my pups her socializng them.

Kentucky Squirrel Dog
Steven Estes and his son from Irvin Kentucky drove out today and picked her their red and white natural bob tail female Mountain Fiest puppy out of Bunny and Bigun. This makes Stevens 2nd pup he has gotten from our kennels. Good luck with her Steven and keep us posted on her progress.

I am very poor at this, please bear with me. took pictures with a telephone, not very good. chester barking at grey one in cage on the ground then I pulled it up the tree and let him bark. after he got tired shook the squirrel out and let him chase it up tree. He is showing more intrest on every one. also went fishing last sunday in the pamlico sound got rained out but caught a few tarhill flouner an a speckled trout. They are scarce due to years cold winter. I will think about you when the peanut oil gets hot.

Dana Dhal " Little Pig" his grand son and son-in-law drove from Afton, VA. yesterday and spent the night in Hazard last night and drove over this morning and picked up their Black and White mountain Feist male pup out of Bunny X Bigun . Littlepig named the pup Lilgun and it is fittng because lilgun was the runt out of the litter of 8 pups.

Georgia squirrel dog
Brian Ivester and his brother Jennings came up from Young Harris Georgia. and picked up a pair of black and white female pups out of Snowflake and Taz back in the winter. When the pups were about 10 weeks old Jennings called me he had carpet down for his opup to use for dog bedding. He says he went to feed the pup one evening and the pup got tangeled up in the strands of carpet and choked to death.
Then Jenneings calls me one evening and tells me his pup Hershey was starting to trees squirrels good. The next morning he calls me back and tells me shortly after he called me with the good report his Hershey got ran over by a car and was dead.

Been a busy week here at our kennels and today was no exception. First Eric Vanderpool of gunlock Kentucky dropped by for a visit talking and looking at our dogs. While Eric was here he booked a pup and as he was leaving Gerry Green and family drove out from Denton Texas and picked up his breeding pair of Mountain Feist pups today. His youngest son on the left is holding their Natural Bob tail female out of Zoey X Joe Black. His wife is holding their male pup out of Bunny X Bigun.
While here they picked up another Zoey X Joe Black pup heading for Northern California. They are giving it a ride foe George A. Palmer II of Guido California.
Really enjoyed the visit Gerry . You guys have a safe trip home and keep us posted on your pups progress. You too George.
Shortly after Gerry left Doug and sorry Doug I forgot your last name drove up from Saint Augustine Florida looking at out dogs. He took several pics to take back home to his dad to look over before booking a pup.
